When I first read about self-reliance in How It Works, it rang deep. “Self-reliance was good as far as it went, but it didn’t go far enough. Some of us once had great self-confidence, but it didn’t fully solve the fear problem, or any other. When it made us cocky, it was worse.” I was Bar Mitzvahed and now I was a man! What happened? Why had I failed so miserably? I was supposed to do well; achievement was the measure of success. Accolades, awards, and bonuses were all in the rear-view mirror. I was miserable, broke, with alcoholic shakes, dope sick. You handed me the 12 Steps and surrounded me with a fellowship of others who had been saved from the pit of despair.
Maybe it could work for me?
Yesterday started at Monica’s with 2 old-timers; one from Minnesota and the other from an Indian Reservation! We shared and laughed for 2 hours! Then, guys from Phoenix showed up, and back to Monica’s we went! Again, with a Midwest guy who went to ASU in the 70’s and a Times Square junkie, more discussion and laughter, mainly at ourselves.
Back at the cabin, we sat on the front porch where the sign on the rail says, “Porch Therapy In Session.” It was!
Walking into El Rancho for the Men’s Fellowship Retreat, the room quickly filled with over 40 men. We had a great dinner, Brent from Thailand joined in on Zoom for his 19th birthday, and the speaker Greg from Phoenix talked about not fitting in until he had a drink. His journey started when he was only 11 years old! He came to us & rebuilt his life on a new foundation with a spark of Love.
As each person shared, it was obvious that Something carried every one of us sitting there. Rather than sitting at the bar, or in a doctor’s office waiting for a refill, I came to the Great Doctor and didn’t even know it!
Thank you….. Doctor, My eyes!!!
