The Ner Tamid (נֵר תָּמִיד) is Hebrew for "eternal light" or "continuous light." Placed above the ark where the Torah scrolls are kept, it represents the abiding presence of God and the light of the Torah. I came to my first meeting in darkness; at the time, unbeknownst to me, the Spirit in the room represented the Ner Tamid!
Thank you once again for showing me how to rekindle it. Why?? See below:
I went to pick up Walter, 90 years old, for lunch. Walking into his home, he was seated and said he apologized, he’d just had a procedure done and wasn’t feeling 100%. Grabbing some coffee, we sat and talked, with some crude jokes & stories about life mixed in. Laughter followed, with a big dose of gratitude for our sobriety.
The eternal light was shining as I left!
Just before 5pm, I met up with my brother & son Aaron for dinner at Flo’s. Our family had gathered there many times, always warmly welcomed by the owner Florence Chan.
Last night was no different. I got there early and Flo and I talked about the years past and happy memories, and I showed her the latest photos of the family. She smiled and with tears in her eyes, said she was always so happy to see us all together, and was glad to hear that Bob had moved back. The food, as always, was wonderful, and as we went to pay, our server said it was on the house! The Ner Tamid shines bright again!
Later, at the Let’s Talk About It meeting, the power of the Light was being discussed. Some called it Jesus, others the Spirit of Love or like me, Adonai (אֲדֹנָי). Whatever IT is, the program of recovery asks us to write down and share the things in us that block The Light. How did they know?
After the meeting, my friend Todd and I met to talk about what’s blocking our light. The recovery literature says that “it may be obscured by pomp, by calamity, and by worship of other things.” As I keep writing it down and sharing it, poof! IT gets brighter. Again, how did you know?
At the hospital visiting Cliff after back surgery, Cliff and I got a bit loud, laughing about being told to be quiet and follow the rules on the floor. What rules? The "eternal light" was shining bright as we celebrated a successful surgery.
Thank you for taking me out of darkness and putting me on the river of dreams.
