Sitting here this morning after speaking with a few friends, I took time quietly looking back at my journey in sobriety. How did I ever survive not only the tragedy of a life I constructed for my family, but the trials & challenges in sobriety? I’ll never forget the first time calling my sponsor, telling him how confused, scared, and resentful I was. He responded with confidence, saying, “Steve, turn to page 86 and let’s read this together.”
I opened the book, and said, “Hey, this says ‘On Awakening…’ aren’t I on Step One?” He laughed, which I took personally. Then he said to me,
“Steve, you are awakening now right? You’re not coming to! God could and would if sought. You're calling me. You're going to meetings. Trust the process. Put into these 12 steps the time and energy you put into everything else, and things will work out.”
Thank you. My On Awakening practice quiets the noise, the struggle to manage. To my great surprise, things ARE working out!
The 12 Steps have given me a way to live; walking in the presence of Something greater than me is far better than self-reliance gave me.
