My dear friend Stan Grant used to tell me, “Steve, Today is all we have, try to stay in it. Quit borrowing trouble.” I asked him, “How can I do that? I have debt to pay off, a job to manage, and kids to take care of. And my marriage is a mess. I need to fix that.” He calmly said,“Steve, Step 3 says we turn these things over to THE CARE OF GOD; Step 1 says these are unmanageable by us; take time with Steps 2 and 3 and you’ll find freedom to enjoy the day.” Later, in the rooms I heard that like the disease, recovery is progressive; work the 12 steps, trust the process and help others. This is the path, and in trusting the process, we are free to live.
Yesterday, Richard and I drove past our old family cabin and met the new owners. They were happy to meet me & hear my family stories from the 80’s & 90’s; they invited me to come back in November when they were done with the renovation to share more memories. Gratitude and love flowed; and we drove away to play golf. The course was in beautiful shape, but at the 3rd hole, the siren went off warning of lightning.
We drove to meet up with guys for discussion about living sober. The camaraderie, sarcasm and love was great. Going with the flow sounds so simple; yet, without encouragement from you to continue to let go, I would have been at the bar at the Lion’s Den or Charlie Clarks. Or end up behind a Circle K.
Thank you for a life worth living and the tools to continue, one day at a time.
