After celebrating Father’s Day on the phone with my 2 sons, Gail and I headed out to Sunrise Ski Area to join the annual hike under the chairlift up Sunrise Mountain. Packing a lunch in the backpack to enjoy at mid-mountain, I flashed back to experiences spanning 40 years to ski with my brother Bob, Aaron & Josh. Aaron always wanted to get 1st spot in the parking lot, and we did again yesterday! Gail & I have been going there with friends for over 20 years. How did that all happen? Somehow, clean & sober, I got a job selling sunglasses to ski shops and ski resorts in the Southwest US. I didn’t and couldn’t have planned that.
Somehow, it all had unfolded in the goodness you promised early in sobriety.
Sitting at the midway lodge, the memories were overwhelming. Grilling lunch with my family, even with my Aunt Gerda & Uncle Tom visiting from Cincinnati! My brother & uncle are Spirits; my Mom and Dad would share in the joy of our ski trips sitting in Phoenix, sharing the family adventures on the phone. Their Spirits were present; as I brought in all of the Love, I spoke with them and gave a deep thanks to them and to a loving God.
Gail and I sat and had our lunch, and started to walk down Lower Lupe, a run that my kids and I had enjoyed skiing so many times. Breathing in Love and gratitude, not only of yesterdays, but in the moment, the classic song “You are the Sunshine of My Love” came to mind. Not hazy drug inspired, lost moments, days, weeks and months I lived in for years before my 24-hour chip!
It was a deepest, inner feeling of The Love inside. Thank you for the priceless gift of Your Love.
