The 12 steps seemed kind of radical, starting with admitting I’m powerless, followed up by not being able to manage my life. Then Step 2 mentions insanity. Really? I came here looking for some understanding and love, and this is what I get, being told I’m powerless, unmanageable and insane?!! I called my sponsor. Once again, he laughed, and then said, “Steve, you are coming to AA to learn to believe in something other than reliance on drugs and alcohol, right? The 12-step program offers a pathway to a new belief; we call it a design for living that works. It only works if you admit your way is not working. That’s up to you.”
I thought long and hard, and had to admit my way was not working, so I got into the Steps. Coming to believe in a new power is a lifelong journey; today, walking to the restaurant to meet my family, I thought about the past week I just spent with them. How did it all happen?
It wasn’t my plan, or under my control. It’s then that I’m carried to a wondrous adventure, unfolding into new goodness and love.
So just how do I express my gratitude for the gifts of faith and letting go. Like the song time passages; each day I thank you for giving me a ticket on the last train home tonight!
