Yesterday, waiting for the announcement for the power to come back on, we were playing backgammon, relaxing, but thinking to myself, “when are they going to turn the lights back on? Why is it taking so long?” I remember being a newcomer, wanting to have 5 or 10 years sober. Then I’ll be comfortable, able to manage everything again! My sponsor had asked me a couple of questions. “Steve, remember when you wanted to get your driver's license; when you wanted to be 21 so you could legally drink, and when you wanted to get married? Did any of those things fix you?” We both laughed so hard! What a joke; what am I so afraid of, and anxious and rushing around about? I had no clue how to fully be in the present, to fully enjoy each day. Coming back to the present, playing the game with Gail, another couple came over to watch. The man had on a Vietnam Veterans Hat; his wife was Asian. We started talking and learned so much. He was a Naval officer; she had been in the produce business in Fresno and broke through the glass ceiling for women in that business. I asked if she knew my friend Barry Z. She gave us a big smile, and said, “oh yes, his dad Marty was a terrific guy, and I watched Barry take the business to the next level” What? Barry had just left me a voicemail about our upcoming Men’s Retreat in Pinetop in April. Just then, the power came back on, and everyone was cheering!!
No one could have put that moment together. Yes, the waiting is still the hardest part.
Thank you for helping me learn to turn to You, to stay in and enjoy the present moment, rather than letting my fears and imagination take me out into self-pity or fantasy land.
