What is surrender? Walking into my first meeting, I didn’t realize it was an act of surrender. I had admitted to my innermost self that my life, once inspired and driven by the power of drugs and alcohol, had quit working. Little did I know this was the first step in surrendering my will.
Many years later, a buddy drove up in a battered pickup truck to do tile work. He had a white flag on his dashboard, and on the back was a bumper sticker, “Sober is Sexy!” WTF???
I was embarrassed to have this banged up truck in our driveway. But the humor, laughter and love that followed helped me let go a little bit more.
Yesterday, I received a call from my buddy who wasn’t quite sure which way to turn. After some discussion, we decided to meet for lunch, and the rest of the day unfolded with miracles of love, fellowship and even complimentary dessert from the servers! They brought it out with a candle, saying “each day is a birthday; we just wanted to thank you both for coming in to have lunch.”
Wow, when I let go, new life and miracles really do happen; so why not celebrate each day as a birthday!
Then, last night on the Zoom Mtg., we did Concept 1. I learned that the 12 Concepts were adopted by the Fellowship in 1962; that Recovery (the 12 Steps), Unity (the 12 Traditions) were supported by the 12 Concepts (Service) as the 3rd Legacy, to form a steady foundation and path for new life, one day at a time. Like a 3-legged bar stool, it’s a steady seat to ride the waves.
Thank you again for asking me to come take a seat, to share, celebrate and learn to dance to the music!
