My buddy Todd, a terrific guy & mechanic who’s looked after multi-million dollar classic car collections, did a house call for me. Almost as expensive as my cocaine habit, we both laughed as I raised up the hood of the 67 ‘Vette. WTF is wrong now? It was running so good, at 95-100mph!!! The diagnosis: something electrical is draining the battery; well, I’ve only put in 3 this year. A tribute to Dad’s dedication and work, we also looked around at all of the wonderful posters in my garage, evidence of a wonderful life. How has it all happened?
Somehow, I surrendered, got busy with the steps, and life unfolded. Good times, and bad. Divorce, new job & careers, vacations, times of money & no money. Oh well, once again, show me what to do next.
At lunch with Richard, we laughed about what we give our power to. We took in the beauty all around us, and the phone started to go off, with others trying to manage and figure out life. That continued all day, until the 6pm Zoom Mtg., where my friend Brian shared on Tradition Three:
“the only requirement for membership is a desire to quit drinking.”
Guys from California, Maui, Pinetop, and Tonto Basin all chimed in about gratitude for the membership requirements. Unlike any other club, there are no dues or fees. Why? We’ve already paid the highest price:
loss of self, often including loss of loved ones & family, jobs, homes and security.
Yet the gifts of hope, fellowship, a sense of God’s Grace and Love, and a new purpose came into our lives.
If we do the work, the good overrides the bad, without taking a drug or a drink.
Today, I give thanks for the floodgates of emotions released in recovery; life is not perfect, but with You and you all, it’s pretty damn good.
