Sounds of Silence from Simon & Garfinkel was a breakthrough song about the inner spirit of love back in the 60’s. It was written to honor the friendship between Simon & Garfunkel and their good friend Sandy Greenberg, to empathize with Greenberg's sudden-onset of blindness. The statement in Bill’s Story, ‘How blind I had been.’ made me reflect back to the true meaning of his statement. Under the influence, masked by the illusion of power and self will run riot, I was blind to sensitivities to others, and admitting to and dealing with my own shortcomings. I really didn’t have any! It was all your fault; no one gave me any credit for how hard I’d tried to manage well. Now everyone was against me. Crying out for help, you told me to get quiet. Quiet?? What was that? When you told me my instincts had gone astray, and to write down my grudges, my fears and my sexual history, I couldn’t connect the dots.
Thank you, God. Having identified some of my faulty thinking & behavior, I am able to hear the sounds of silence, rather than just static and an endless stream of noise. It's in the quiet that He may be found.
