In the middle of doing the readings, I received a text reminding me that today is Stan Grants’ Heavenly Birthday. I took time to reflect back on our many days together. For some reason, the Divine Influence led me to recovery and opened the door to priceless relationships; many I would have missed. Trapped in addiction driven by ego, pride, fear & shame, with nowhere else to go, I came to you. All of my relationships were broken, especially with myself.
The memories from the last 43 years prove one thing; I don’t know what’s best for me. Yet, oftentimes, I still think I know what’s best for you! Insanity! My friend Jim E. says Step 2 works on many things, even to spackle something!
At Cyclelogical Coffee with Dick, we talked about our latest thoughts and adventures and agreed on one thing: we need one another to keep us on the Broad Highway promised. There are many side roads and detours that at first look great, full of excitement & relief. The book calls them alluring distractions!
Now, instead of needing to escape, I have a Fellowship, most of the time sane, to keep me laughing & letting go of grandiosity or self-pity.
On the phone with a guy just coming back from a detour, I gave thanks for a discipline I rejected for so long. Instead of Sinatra’s, “I Did It My Way,” I’ve adapted mantras you shared I first thought were so stupid: “Easy Does It” -“First Things First” and “Let Go Let God.”
Later, at the Men’s Mtg. the topic was on the benefits of willingness. One day, I was willing to go to any length to get loaded; the next day, I was willing to try it your way. I guess I felt I had nothing to lose.
If you find yourself alone in a dark alley or room, give it a try. And don’t stop; as the song says, "tomorrow will be better than before."
