“What an order, I can’t go through with it” is an often-heard expression in the rooms.
Early in sobriety, and many times since, I have felt there’s no use, no way out, falling into the well of self-doubt & self-pity. Many times, calling my sponsor has helped me through the smokescreen and cloud of self-reliance. It’s the cloud of unknowing!
Yesterday at breakfast with our neighbors, Bob talked about his upcoming Elk hunt in Texas where each hunter has their own guide!
I thought, wow, that’s what a sponsor is!
Last night having dinner on the back deck with Gail, we ate burgers off the grill and played Backgammon. It was a wonderful night at the cabin; at peace, while our phones kept buzzing with the latest shooting, outbreak (or truce) in Iran, gas prices rising or falling. The outside drama did not give me a reason to drink or use. Not even a thought!
This morning, our friends Larry & Dawn had driven up from the Valley for a break from the heat, and we met at the 7:30 am mtg. The topic was the Step Nine promises; one of my buddies, Tim, had his 2-year-old son with him. Years before getting sober, Tim had worked on a workforce crew while in rehab; today, he’s living life’s adventures married, raising a son with no alcohol or other additives! He’s connected!
At Monica’s, Monica came over to introduce herself. She and Dawn own horses, and they talked about raising them from young foals to riding them at shows & rodeos. The action photo Jonathon took of Monica from the rodeo last week was another reminder of the goodness that comes from letting go and getting connected. Marina, sitting with us for breakfast with her oxygen, shared her story of being delivered from death’s door after 6 days in the hospital. On the 7th day, she left feeling healthy and connected!
Leaving to head back to the cabin to write the Waves, I got a call from a buddy celebrating his 17th anniversary clean & sober. Now, instead of “what an order” you’ve given me a guide to let go; better yet, with the help of a guide, to be connected.
Thanks for sobriety without end.
