The Desert Elder Athanasius (c. 300–373) described the daily hours spent singing Psalms as most beneficial in nurturing and maturing the emotions, transforming how the chanter understands the Bible’s words, and even God. One of Benedict's favorites was Psalm 51:17: “Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise.” Whatever causes us grief is healed when we sing Psalms, and whatever causes us stumbling will be discovered. They become your own songs.

“Hineini – (Here I am!) What are we to make of this potent and important word? As the prophet Elijah found out, God is often not in the fire, or earthquake but rather in the ‘still small voice’ (after 1Kings:19:12). That’s the call we need to hear: the still small voice of conscience, the yearning of our souls, the sometimes desperate pleas of our hearts.” further explained: myjewishlearning.com/article/hineni-a-prayer-for-the-ability-to-pray
