A Wave

April 18, 2025

“Where had the time gone? How did we get such a good life? ”

Three readings. A song that says the rest. And inspiration for whatever this day is here to teach.

Varieties of Religious Experience

William James

“Our conceptions always require a sense-content to work with, and as the words 'soul,' 'God,' 'immortality,' cover no distinctive sense-content whatsoever, it follows that theoretically speaking they are words devoid of any significance. Yet strangely enough they have a definite meaning for our practice. We can act as if there were a God . . .." Varieties of Religious Experience, p. 52

Loving Surrender

Richard Rohr

“In recovery, God beckons us to what we would call ‘grief work.’ Holding the mystery of pain, we look at it, and start to learn from it. Driven by so many fears & false beliefs, we can begin to let go. Surrounded by others in recovery, we can’t deny that we have been given a kind of inner guarantee that the death of these beliefs is not final. With softened hearts, The mystery leads us to an uncanny & newfound compassion and understanding of ourselves & others.. Deep down in our heart and psyche, love, both human and divine, has opened something eternal & gratuitous in a deeply mysterious and compelling way.”

A Deep Breath of Life

Alan Cohen

“We ask, ‘where would I be if my life is guided only by ego and intellect?’ The real answer is to understand that without a consciousness of The Spirit of the Universe, I will be ever seeking more conditions to be secure in my wholeness. I remind myself that I am doing the best I can with what I know; that I am willing to give up my current idea for the bigger picture. Today, God, help me to know that my prayers are worthy; that as a child of Your universe, I am deserving of Your kingdom, with true freedom and happiness.”
